THE DALLES, Ore. — Businesses that make and sell products in Wasco County are invited to put a listing on the new Made in Wasco County Facebook page launched this month by the Port of The Dalles.
“The idea is to show folks just how many things are made in Wasco County and how many options are available to shop locally,” said Kathy Ursprung, who manages the page for the Port. “I’m always impressed at how many talented and industrious entrepreneurs we have here and the quality and creativity of their products.”
Current listings on the page range from cottage food and craft producers to high-tech manufacturers. The number of businesses included grows by the day.
The Made in Wasco County Facebook page was developed as part of the port’s ongoing mission to support “the creation, retention, expansion and recruitment of businesses and jobs that will enhance the economy of the Port district.” The page is done without charge as a service of the Port.
Most of the businesses featured on the page are small businesses and cottage industry. Small businesses make up 99.7 percent of U.S. employer firms, 64 percent of net new private-sector jobs, 49.2 percent of private-sector employment and 42.9 percent of private sector payroll, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.
“The Port is offering this service in the hope that it will provide an extra boost of marketing to help these businesses thrive and grow,” Ursprung said.
Eventually, the information captured on the Facebook page will be turned into a regular website indexed by type of product so it can serve as an easy-to-use guide to all things Made in Wasco County.
