Friday, Oct. 3, marks National Manufacturing Day, and the Port of The Dalles and several local manufacturers are working together to provide tours of local manufacturing lines, spotlighting the important role manufacturing plays in the local economy.
“Manufacturing and similar industrial jobs are the bedrock of a community’s economy and one of the best opportunities to provide significant numbers of living-wage jobs,” said Andrea Klaas, executive director of the Port of The Dalles.
Manufacturing accounts for 840 jobs in Wasco County, according to most recent Oregon Labor Market data. That means the manufacturing sector provides 10 percent of the county’s private, non-farm employment and is the third-largest nongovernment employment sector.
According to the National Association of Manufacturers:
The annual average salary of manufacturing workers is more than $77,000.
Manufacturers have the highest job tenure in the private sector.
Ninety percent of manufacturing workers have medical benefits.
For every $1 of goods produced, manufacturing generates an additional $1.43 for the economy.
Paychecks from manufacturing jobs circulate in a community, 2.9 times.
Manufacturing firms in Wasco County produce a wide variety of products. A few examples include cherries for the famous Ben and Jerry’s Cherry Garcia ice cream (Oregon Cherry Growers), lumber products (Precision Lumber), lightweight 3D metal parts for the unmanned vehicle industry (Integrated 3D), stainless steel vats for the microbrewery industry (AAA Metal Fabrication), bottled water (H2Oregon), preservative-free fruit and vegetable powders (Powder Pure) and wine by the glass (Copa di Vino).
