Port seeks more maker businesses to add to website
The Port of The Dalles has brought a new website online this week, MadeinWascoCounty.com, spotlighting the folks in Wasco County who make everything from hand-beaded jewelry to beer to industrial vats, and more.
“MadeinWascoCounty.com is stage two of an effort by the Port to help existing local businesses grow and thrive, from major manufacturers to small cottage businesses,” said Kathy Ursprung, Port marketing and communications manager. “It’s no coincidence that it is coming online just as the core holiday shopping season looms.”
The Port started this effort in fall 2014 to provide added value to existing Port District businesses with the launch of the popular Made in Wasco County Facebook page. At current count, the page includes about 60 Wasco County makers.
“If you’re just browsing through on Facebook, that’s great, but that’s a lot of businesses to scroll through if you are looking for something specific,” Ursprung said. “That’s why MadeinWascoCounty.com is searchable, alphabetized and organized into categories — so it’s easier and quicker to find the business you’re looking for.”
The Port is also seeking more businesses to include on the website and Facebook page. As the name implies, the site is for businesses or individuals who make and sell a product.
“Making a product doesn’t have to be the only thing the business does,” Ursprung said. “In fact, the product can be secondary to their main purpose, but since the site is oriented toward makers and shoppers, some kind of a product needs to be involved.”
The Port’s mission is to support “the creation, retention, expansion and recruitment of businesses and jobs that will enhance the economy of the port district.” One of the most effective ways to do that is to help existing businesses grow and become stronger.
“We want people to shop with local businesses, because the money they spend here stays here and circulates to other businesses and service providers,” Ursprung said. “Buying from local businesses also helps assure that those businesses and the things they offer are available in our community in years to come.
The quickest way to be included is to email a business photo and brief description to firstname.lastname@example.org. If you’d like more assistance, call Ursprung at 541-298-4148.
