Effective Feb. 1, the State of Oregon Building Codes Division is providing services on behalf of Wasco, Sherman, Gilliam and Wheeler counties.
The change comes as a result of the dissolution of Mid-Columbia Council of Governments, which had previously provided these services.
The Building Codes Services office has moved to a new location in the Wasco County Public Works and Planning building at 2705 E. Second St. in The Dalles. The office’s main phone number is 541-506-2650 and its fax number is 541-506-2651.
People who visit Building Codes Services may see some familiar faces, but can also expect some personnel changes, according to Scott Hege, County Commissioner for the Wasco County Board of Commissioners.
“I know one of the inspectors reapplied while another elected to retire,” Scott says.
Wasco County could have taken over operation of the functions, but chose to take some time to consider the alternatives.
“We anticipate continuing to provide great services to the area through the local office,” Scott says. “Timely inspections are a big issue.”
One possibility the county may consider in the future is working with the City of The Dalles to provide services collaboratively.
“Ninety percent of active permits are issued in city jurisdiction, so it makes sense that the city be involved,” Scott says.
Right now, the county is taking a wait-and-see attitude, he says.
“We’ll see how things go. If they go well and the state does a great job, there may be no need for us to do anything. If, for some reason, things do not go well and people are unhappy, we’ll see.”
Building Codes office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m.
